1. The Grandeur
First things first, the movie was nothing short of a visual spectacle. With cutting-edge VFX and brilliant detailing, director Rajamouli has brought out an epic period film, in true Amar Chitra Katha Style. Right from the characterization, the way the characters have been styled, and the detailing in the film, is to be lauded. The jaw-dropping visual spectacle is a benchmark in Indian cinema. The very gargantuan scale of ambition is laudable.
2. The VFX
The gripping war sequence between the Keekala’s and the Mahishmathi warriors, the stunning shots of the heavenly looking waterfall, and the massive city – all these sequences only prove how spectacular the VFX is. Indian cinema has witnessed a new high with Rajamouli’s imagination brought to life by Hollywood-like CG effects. If these movie sequences didn’t leave you spell-bound, then nothing will!
3. Director Rajamouli’s brilliance
If Magadheera raised the standards of Telugu cinema, then Baahubali has definitely raised the standards of the Indian film industry. The visionary behind both these film is director Rajamouli. Working tirelessly, the director’s execution is top notch. It’s great that he has dared to think like no one ever has. The director brought his love for Amar Chitra Katha alive by giving us this historical-drama. The story of this film is as old as a mountain, but the execution is what counts.
4. The fight and execution
Baahubali boasts of never-seen-before stunts in Indian cinema! The reason is that, no other filmmaker has showcased a medieval age war sequence before. The epic blood-gore battle includes slash-in-the-throat sequences and iron balls, spears and boulders flying in mid-air. This well-choreographed war sequence will surely grip you! Although, you may be reminded of scenes from 300 and The Mummy, what is superb is the way the director goes about telling the tale! The result is that you feel as if you’re in the battle-field witnessing this spectacle! It is brilliant! The cinematography and the art direction [by Senthil Kumar and Sabu Cyril] add excellent effects to the film.
5. Superb performances
Ramya Krishnan and Sathyaraj are the soul of this film! With their commanding screen presence, they’ll mesmerize you with their performance. Prabhas‘ commanding presence is brilliant. Especially, in the scenes where he commands his army. It’s like the character was written for him! Rana Daggubati‘s hefty physique and fierce looks may remind you of the biblical character, Goliath. This is by far the best role he’s played!
6. Strong female characters
Judging by the posters, it must’ve struck you that Tamannaah’s role is that of a princess and isn’t going to add value to this film. But her characterization completely takes you by surprise! Although we get to witness very little of Anushka, we’re glad that she has nailed her performance with her fierce expressions. But what’s truly brilliant about the women in this film, is how strong their roles are! They aren’t merely objects of desire or act as the king’s aide. But, they are the pons who change the plot of this film. They take on enemies, shoot arrows, avenge villains and take over the throne of a kingdom! Ramya Krishnan, Anushka and Tamannaah breathe life into these roles! Women power!
7. Goosebumps guaranteed!
Warning: While you’re watching this movie, a few scenes may give you involuntary body reactions called – Goosebumps! And the feeling is fantastic! A few noteworthy scenes include the sequence when the commoners finally see their old king Baahubali and call out his name. Within seconds, you’ll find yourself calling out the king’s name and cheering for Baahubali! The stunt sequence in heavy rain, where Shiva grabs the sword from mid-air is very well choreographed and performed brilliantly [stunt sequence by Peter Hein]! There are a few moresequences, but revealing them would be unfair! Overall, you shouldn’t watch this film only for it’s story. The film is to be experienced and celebrated. The sheer guts and ability of the director to execute his vision is laudable. This is a triumph of ideas and imagination, brought to life by Rajamouli and his hardworking team!
